3rd Quarter Submission

Revision #1 cover

  • The cover of my magazine followed a very straightforward setup. The  picture is a wide shot with the model on the left third of the frame so that i would have space for the subheadings.
  • I utilized two different fonts for the name of the magazine which I will most likely change during the reediting of the cover. I plan to keep the cover photo the same because it provides enough space for me to move around the subheadings and resize them.
  • The major revision that i did was to size up the smaller text because it was illegible. The other revision i made was to fix the cover name.

Revision #2 table of contents

  • This is the table of contents page from my quarter 2 submission. The concept for this page was to keep it as simple and organized as possible, so i only used one photo and kept the heading simple. The picture was taken in portrait mode on my iPhone 8 at the restaurant where I did the interview for the main article.
  • The heading and sub-contents were black all black because that way it would stand out more against the background. The effective use of white space is a tactic in the industry that is used to create a sort of pause for the consumer and draw their attention to certain spots. Therefore utilized this device to bring notice to the content instead of having distractions.

  • I added a few things like page number and edition name on the bottom of the page. I also expanded the picture to better fill the frame and added the page number where the featured article was on the corner of the photo. The ''table of contents'' title got italicized and bolded so that it matched the cover title more.

Marketing Plan

  • social media marketing- Instagram, Facebook, pint-rest, websites, cooking shows, foodnetwork commercials
  • Events- magazines hosting contests, sweepstakes, mixers,
  • mailing lists
  • Billboard ads

My marketing plan utilizes social media as this is the quickest and most efficient way to reach many people. The advantage of using online marketing is that targeting a specific audience is made easier by the use of tags. Hashtags on Instagram, Facebook, twitter, etc.  appear to people based on their interests through a series of algorithms designed to introduce related content to users. For example if a user follows food-network or Tasty magazine they will likely be suggested to follow other cuisine related pages. Through this feature online marketing is made easier than ever because now not only is your content circulating but other products can lead to your own.

I also will be using a conventional form of marketing like mailing lists. When a customer visits our social media or website they can sign up through email and we will send monthly samples and edition previews via mail.

I created an Instagram account to market and promote my magazine.

Traditional Distribution Research #1

Supermarkets like Target, Walmart, Wholefoods, etc. usually have an entire isle dedicated solely to the sale of print media like magazines and such. Classic magazines like the Times and Peoples were distributed like this for years before other methods became available. Even new-gen magazines like food network and Real-Simple use the traditional ways despite having various digital  alternatives because these methods still work.
Door to door distribution is the most conventional method of spreading a product. Monthly subscriptions allow for customers to receive their magazines in the comfort of their homes. This 'door to door' method has always worked since the beginning of media distribution to satisfy readers and draw in new subscribers.

audience engagement research

Food and Wine magazine is advertised on pintrest with headlines like '136 best food and wine images'. they have digital and print subscriptions. Their audience is people older than 21 because thats the legal drinking age and mostly middle class or high income because their recipes include high cost ingredients and wine which can be expensive. They have a strong social media presence as they have an account in all the major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pintrest. They host events like the 'Food and Wine classic in Aspen' where top chefs and enthusiasts go to get accentuated, dine on top notch food, and talk about common interests. Events like these provide income and is an effective self advertising method as they can market their other magazines and content. Food and Wine is owned by the powerful conglomerate Meredith Corps. so like every other magazine of theirs they have sweepstakes and chances to win prizes for subscribers.
  • Food network magazine-like mine-targets consumers from all demographics; men, women, kids/teens, and people with various levels of cooking. Their content is very diverse. They have articles, recipes from all types of food groups, and really adheres to the interests of food lovers. Food Network is originally a channel with different cooking shows that has expanded and now has multiple forms of media. So the magazine is mostly advertised in the shows and on their website. They also offer incentives to draw in readers by offering a free trial and perks that come with the subscription. Food network also host events like the Wine and Food festival in New York City  where food lovers can meet over 25 world-class chefs and sommeliers, eat dishes made by the chefs, and enjoy the culinary artistry. Events like these are perfect to market the magazine to new audiences that are interested.

Revisions

Due to some uneven expanding of images the resolution of some of the pictures I used were a little pixelated and were stretched disproportionately. Also the text and images were out of alignment and looked awkward. I plan to fix this issue by using adobe indesign to arrange  the pictures proportionately and use the resizing tools to improve my product. having higher quality pictures and content will add to the presentation of my magazine and make it more aesthetically appealing to the consumers. The only system that i used to create all the pages was publisher which limits the creative opportunities and the finished product appears more juvenile.

Traditional Distribution research #3

Traditional forms of distribution are still regularly used however in today's digital era everything has to have an online presence or ...
